Stop and Think

Social Skills Program

Skill #1: Listening

1. Turn your body and look at the person who is talking.

2. Listen to and think about what is being said.

3. If needed, ask a question.

4. When appropriate, say what you want or need to say.

Skill #2: Following Directions

1. Listen to the direction.

2. Decide if you understand the direction (ask a question if you don't understand).

3. Repeat the direction out loud or to yourself.

4. Decide what you need to do to follow or respond to the direction.

Skill #3: Asking for Help

1. Ask yourself, "Can i do this alone, or do i really need someone else's help?"

2. If you decide that you need help, think about the different people that might help you and choose one.

3a. If in class, raise your hand and wait for that person to listen to you.

3b. If out of class, walk up to the person you need help from and wait for him or her to listen to you.

4. Say, "I need help," in a nice or quiet voice.

5. Tell the person specifically what you need help with.

Skill #4: Ignoring Distractions

1. Look away or walk away from the person or distraction.

2. Say to yourself, "I won't look and I won't listen--I'll keep on (working or playing).

3. Continue to look away and focus on your activity.

4. Say, "Good job" silently to yourself, especially if the distraction continues.
