Stop and Think

Social Skills Program

Skill #1: Listening

Step 1: Turn your body and look at the person who is talking.

Step 2: Listen to and think about who is being said.

Step 3: If needed, ask a question.

Step 4: When appropriate, say what you want or need to say.

Skill #2: Following Directions

Step 1: Listen to the direction.

Step 2: Ask a question if needed or you don't understand.

Step 3: Repeat the direction out loud or to yourself.

Step 4: Get ready and follow the direction.

Skill #3: Asking for Help

Step 1: Ask yourself, "Can I do this alone or do I really need someone else's help?"

Step 2: If you need help, think about the different people who might help you and choose one.

Step 3: In class, appropriately get that person's attention and wait for the person to listen to you. If you

are not in class, walk up to the person you need help from and wait for him or her to listen to you.

Step 4: Say, "I need help," in a nice or quiet voice.

Step 5: Tell the person specifically what you need help with.
