Kindergarten children have been busy. We are writing in our journals at least 3 times a week. Parents, please help out at home by NOT spelling words. Kindergarten children should write like Kindergarten children and they do not know yet how to spell every word correctly. That is OK! Most kids can now hear beginning sounds of each word and will write the letter for the sound they hear. That is great! Encourage your child to stretch out each word and listen for the sounds heard.
Reading groups have been started and most children are reading several books a week. Help out at home by reviewing flash card words and having your child spell and or write these words. Look for words in magazines and books. Go to the Library and check out easy readers. Make reading fun.
Math groups are working on numbers, patterns, coins, counting, and word problems. Keep working on skills not mastered and also get out the money. It is important for the children to be able to recognize a penny, dime, nickel, and quarter. They also need to know the amounts each is worth.
Lessons are still being taught on rhyming words, beginning sounds, counting how many syllables in a word, and compound words ( fire + man = fireman).
As you can see, there is a lot being learned in our classrooms. Your continued help at home is certainly welcomed.
Thanksgiving Feast for kindergarten will be held on Friday, November 16, 2007. We will have a short program in the atrium before the Feast. All parents, Grandparents, and family are invited and encouraged to attend.
